Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Zak Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments from skipper Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in several conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," remarked the England leader.

However, after the opener made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, he said his players had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal on day four came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team need four wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

This series is set to be decided in only 11 days of play – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," said Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. They're a formidable team. It was always going to be hard coming here against them. They entered as the front-runners and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term future in the side, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in the team's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, Crawley insisted any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk from the outside. There is no chat like that regarding Pope amongst the players," he concluded.
