2K Hires Popular Battle Royale Developer to Revitalize Challenged Hero Shooter Project Ethos
2K Games has secured a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to lead the development team at 31st Union, which is currently working on the upcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as Project Ethos.
Leadership Change Follows Lukewarm Reception
The new appointee takes on the role of studio head at the development studio following the exit of previous head Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' lackluster unveiling last autumn.
Recently, the company's top executive a key figure updated employees about this decision through an official communication, which stressed that early feedback sessions had shown the need for a distinct direction.
The president noted that the developers is now overhauling the project with a renewed vision, aiming to satisfy community desires.
A Pattern of Strategic Acquisitions
The news echoes a comparable move taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they brought on an industry veteran from the Diablo team to work on the BioShock development group.
Below is the full message from Ismailer's communication:
Dear Team—
I know you all just finished your meeting - I trust you’re as thrilled as I am with the recent updates. Previously I shared you all a update, I mentioned the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most driven and talented designers we have had the chance to work with - and we’re eager for that collaboration to persist.”
Through your commitment and flexibility, especially over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.
The community feedback from last fall’s Project ETHOS playtest was revealing. It affirmed the appeal of a action-packed game but indicated we still had refinements needed. It uncovered the need for a more distinct identity.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve come. You accepted the feedback to heart and overhauled the title with a refreshed goal - one that’s poised to achieve its potential to our fans.
The trust in this project strengthens every day. To advance the outstanding development you’ve made, I’m excited to introduce the new hire as the incoming Lead of 31st Union. Following some time of talks, he starts with us on the specified date.
Ben’s leadership and experience in the competitive gaming space is extensive, having devoted the last 15 years producing and managing some of the most popular franchises in the industry, for example Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, the battle royale hit.
Let’s together in welcoming Ben soon. We are all eager to continue seeing the development of Project ETHOS in the time to ahead.
David
Experience of the New Leader

Game Details and Concept
The upcoming game was revealed in last year in conjunction with a early access event. Then, 31st Union portrayed the title as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an innovative step forward on the category."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in real-time to match your preferred approach," the description explains. "Take on the opponents with new abilities, risks, and challenges that shift every match. Will you safely extract with your hard-earned loot? Alternatively go big, risk it all, and hope your squad can secure victory? The choice is in your hands."
The game has not yet received an announced launch window or consoles, but enthusiasts can look forward to more updates as production continues.
